The Power of ADHD

Embarrassing…that’s what used to come to mind when I thought about having ADHD. I’m messy, chronically late, impossibly time blind, quickly emotional, intense as hell, and running with a million ideas at all times. But, then I discovered that my ADHD is an asset…and I wouldn’t get rid of it for the world.

ADHDers are not Neurotypical people. I love that word…neurotypical. It’s used to describe people without ADHD. I don’t want to be “typical”. It conjures up visions of boredom, mundane…ordinary. I decided to embrace my extraordinary brain and make it work FOR me.

Messy?…or do I have a unique organizational skill where I can see everything I need at the same time.

Chronically late? Or, have I created an adrenaline rush that gives my brain enough dopamine to get through the appointment I’m attending.

Time blind? Ok, well, that is a unique thing. It’s like being color blind. Color blind people know the colors exist even if they can’t see them. I know time exists in a straightforward linear fashion but my brain sees it as more flexible than that. It means that sometimes I can accomplish more in a day then many do in a week. It never occurred to me that there was a high chance I could not get 20 major projects done in a single day. It also means time can almost stand still. I once argued that I was sure we had been sitting there for almost 2 hours when it was only 22 minutes. It sure FELT like 120 minutes. Ah, the power of the ADHD brain.

Quickly emotional? Did you know that they have shown on MRI scans that ADHD people tend to feel more intensely than neurotypical brains? We have the capability to feel extreme joy and happiness others may never feel. Our brains love the rush that comes with intense feelings. It also means we are far less likely to keep anything bottled up.

Intense? I prefer the term…Interesting. ADHD people are usually some of the most fascinating people to talk to. We have lots of interests, love to know interesting facts, have wildly creative ideas, and are very passionate about what we believe in.

Ideas? Lots of ideas…and more ideas…and strange ideas…and inventive ideas…and silly ideas…etc. We LOVE ideas.

Think of it like superpowers. If you never learn how to control your powers, they can destroy everything. But, learn to control them and you can conquer your world.

I’m here to help you harness your ADHD powers, and achieve your goals!
